EN MASSE @ MBAM was a large-scale, site-specific mural installation created as part of Big Bang!: Creativity Is Given Carte Blanche at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. The exhibition invited artists to reinterpret works from the Museum’s collection through immersive, multidisciplinary installations.

En Masse — a Montréal-based collaborative drawing project — was commissioned to transform one of the Museum’s largest galleries, covering over 4,200 square feet of wall space. Working from an original piece by A. R. Penck, alongside imagery from the Museum’s collection, the collective developed an expansive black-and-white environment through layered drawing, mark-making, and improvisation.

Over ten days, a team of 33 artists executed the installation directly onto the walls using scaffolding and lift systems, resulting in a monumental fresco. The work reimagined drawing as an immersive spatial experience, dissolving boundaries between individual authorship and collective creation.

Though temporary, the installation was documented before being painted over at the close of the exhibition. Bursey’s contributions included collaborative sections with Caro Caron, alongside involvement in the broader compositional development of the work.
